Lunenburg County Socials

Lunenburg County Socials started as a simple idea: be curious and explore together.

It became a way of exploring Lunenburg County through whatever catches my attention: a meal, a walk, a cemetery, an old building, a creature in the woods, a story, an unusual object, or something else entirely.

You might already know a place well and still find details you haven't noticed, connections you haven't made, questions you haven't asked, or possibilities you haven't considered.

Sometimes that becomes an experience you can join. Sometimes it becomes a collection of references, reading, maps or resources. Sometimes it is simply a way of looking at something that you can take home and use somewhere completely different.

The point isn't simply to show you something interesting.

It's to explore it together and see where the questions lead.

Some things I’ve explored with people

Pierogi Night in Canada

A meal can be a starting point rather than the destination.

Jennifer and her guests came for a Polish-Canadian meal and ended up exploring the landscape, local history, an 1880s one-room schoolhouse, the communities around Mushamush and Union Square, and some of the stories that make this part of Nova Scotia what it is.

The food was important. So was everything that happened around it.

“This was a truly unique and personal experience. Top-notch in every possible way. The food was awesome and so fun to make. It was a joy getting to know Rob. Amazing value for the money, great personal stories, a full personalized itinerary, and a nice switch from seafood on a trip to comfort food when chilly fall weather is in the air. To do it all in an 1880s one-room schoolhouse just topped it off. I could not recommend this enough as an out-of-the-box experience to complement your time in Nova Scotia in the Lunenburg, LaHave, or Mahone Bay area.”

When a place becomes personal

Anne and her family were visiting Niagara and joined me for a War of 1812 walk at Lundy’s Lane.

The day before the tour, Anne shared some of her family background with me. I researched the family’s participation and incorporated those connections throughout the walk, making their own story part of the history they were exploring.

“I gave Rob a little of our family background the day before the tour. He researched our family’s participation and emphasized it throughout the tour. It was a lot of work for him and very special for us. He is engaging and attentive to group needs. I highly recommend him.”

Something to take with you

The experience doesn’t necessarily end when we say goodbye.

Sometimes the most useful thing someone takes away is knowledge: knowing what to look for, how to use a tool, where to find something, how to navigate a place, or simply realizing that they can do something for themselves.

That might be a recipe after a shared meal, directions and resources to continue exploring, a set of references gathered around a particular question, or the knowledge and confidence to use a digital tool they hadn’t been comfortable with before.

I like making those things part of the experience rather than treating the experience as finished when we say goodbye.
